A recent poll conducted by Reuters IPSOS has revealed that a significant number of U.S. workers are already using the artificial intelligence platform ChatGPT to perform basic tasks at their jobs. According to the poll, 28% of employees admitted to regularly using ChatGPT at work. However, interestingly, 10% of respondents revealed that their employers explicitly prohibited the use of AI tools in the workplace. Additionally, 25% of those polled were unsure whether their companies allowed the use of artificial intelligence at all.
The grey area surrounding the use of ChatGPT in workplaces is evident, as major companies like Tinder and Samsung Electronics have implemented a “no ChatGPT rule.” Despite these restrictions, some employees continue to use the technology for tasks such as writing emails and general research. It seems that employers and employees find themselves navigating the murky waters of AI adoption.
Samsung Electronics, for example, banned ChatGPT in the workplace after discovering that an employee had uploaded confidential and sensitive code to the platform. This incident raises concerns about the potential risks associated with AI use in the workplace.
Considering the apparent prevalence of AI in many companies, it is crucial for employers to embrace and harness the power of AI rather than turning a blind eye to its presence. Companies should acknowledge the use of AI by conducting employee town halls to discuss its current applications within the organization. Establishing clear guidelines for acceptable and restricted AI use is also essential. Furthermore, investing in reliable and secure AI technology can help businesses leverage its capabilities while protecting sensitive data.
