Olivia Stevens

The Statesman Journal has hired Olivia Stevens as its fall outdoors journalism intern.

Stevens is a 2023 graduate of the University of Minnesota. She got her start working at the Minnesota Daily, the school's student newspaper, covering city and state politics. She also took on roles at local newspapers like the Mankato Free Press and the St. Paul Pioneer Press. She eventually became the managing editor at the Minnesota Daily. This summer, she completed an internship at Minnesota Public Radio.

Stevens grew up in Hugo, Minnesota, about a half hour from the Twin Cities, and has always been an avid traveler. Other than one road trip, she is a bit of a visitor to Oregon herself. She loves the Pacific Northwest and is excited to see as much of Oregon as she can while she’s here.

Stevens will work with longtime Statesman Journal outdoors reporter Zach Urness to cover the state’s wild places and environment, including public lands, wildfires and outdoor recreation.

Growing up in a suburb, Stevens used every chance she got to retreat in the outdoors. She went to summer camp every year as a kid, and developed a love for long canoeing and kayaking trips. She also loves camping and hiking and is always looking for new places to check out. She hopes to tell stories about unique activities that encourage people to explore the outdoors in new ways.
“I find it amazing how valued the outdoors are here in Oregon,” Stevens said. “I’m so excited to be able to follow environmental news while exploring the wild landscape here.”

Stevens is the final of three outdoors journalism interns for 2023 at the Statesman Journal. The position is funded through sponsors of the Explore Oregon Podcast.

Zach Urness has been an outdoors reporter in Oregon for 15 years and is host of the Explore Oregon Podcast. Urness is the author of “Best Hikes with Kids: Oregon” and “Hiking Southern Oregon.” He can be reached at zurness@StatesmanJournal.com or 503-399-6801. Find him on Twitter at @ZachsORoutdoors.
